vintage rearing glass horse bookends
I recently bought a pair of glass horse bookends that were pictured and described as New Martinsville but were LE Smith obviously there was a substitution in my case. But in general it is easy to confuse the three types. However one rule of thumb the LE Smith have knotted manes- they are rounder and have heavier bases.I think the glass quality gepared to the other two is not as nice on the LE smith . The Fostoria has a cropped mane and is roman nosed but not as roman nosed as the New Martinsville. These two are easy to confuse but the LE Smith is easiest to identify because of the bulkiness and the little knots on the mane.Fostoria has a little ledge running the perimeter of the base that is about 1/2 in. and the horses nose is not as sloped as the New Martinsville. New Martinsville has a larger ledge it is about 1 inch- and the very roman nose-otherwise they look similiar. The book ( Glass Animals) gives a slightly higher price for New Martinsville and Fostoria which is one more reason my dishonest seller substituted the LE Smith. I am just dealing with the rearing glass horse bookends. Since the three names are thrown out together I wanted to help clarify the differences. The LE Smith gees in a variety of colors- the New Martinsville and Fostoria have some beautiful frosted and satin finish but these are hard to find. The LE Smith gees in black so does Fostoria but the New Martinsville does not- however it has pink and peach satin finishes in addition to the crystal.Happy hunting-
